Since our founding in 1886, the YMCA of Greater Houston – now one of the world’s largest chapters – has helped shape the Y’s global mission by putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice; building healthy spirits, minds and bodies for all. A particularly vital embodiment of this mission is our YMCA Partners program. When you become a YMCA Partner, your generous contributions help keep children safe, help young families grow, and help empower people in all corners of our community. Equally important, your gifts support future generations of men, women and children who will seek the life-changing rewards of YMCA membership for themselves and those they love. We invite you to learn more about YMCA Partners and the Houstonians who benefit from your generosity. This is their story and yours. It’s a tale told for 125 years and one we hope is repeated again and again for generations to come.

The only laboratory of its kind in the social work field, the UH-GCSW Virtual Reality Clinical Research Laboratory advances the study of human behavior in astounding ways. Established in 2002 under the expert guidance of visionary researcher and Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Patrick Bordnick, the lab immerses subjects in virtual environments that are highly conducive to the study of addiction, mental health disorders and coping strategies. Utilizing highly advanced hardware and software, researchers bring incredibly realistic locations, sights, sounds, smells and tactile sensations to life. Providing “best-of-both-worlds” opportunities for study, the advanced facility bridges the gap between laboratory controls and real-world situations. While researchers oversee, observe and measure the cognitive and behavioral mechanisms of phenomena such as addiction and relapse, true-to-life environments and encounters enable research subjects to learn more about triggers and temptations. Social work practitioners and therapists can also join in virtual sessions, helping subjects to refine coping skills. Frequently employed in research surrounding alcoholism, nicotine and drug addiction, the lab quite literally makes virtually anything possible, such as study of food cravings, combat-related post-traumatic stress and hostage-negotiation techniques.

Three decades ago, driven by an unquenchable entrepreneurial sprit, pure adrenaline and good-old-fashioned Yankee Ingenuity, William Van Pelt, III acquired the business we know today as The Mid-Continent Companies. From the outset, Bill looked upon a competitive landscape studded with seemingly endless opportunities. Each peak and valley revealing grand prospects and equally daunting challenges. With every fork in the road, he plotted the course for his business, which meticulously evolved from volume-driven operation to carefully crafted client-driven practice. And throughout The Mid-Continent Companies’ long journey, Bill came to know that one tried-and-true maxim always applied, and still applies today: “the only constant is change.” In his years at the firm’s helm, Bill has masterfully preserved and propagated the vision of a truly exceptional enterprise, now proudly reflected in the eyes of his sons and the shining achievements of nearly 20 talented team members. What was once a workman-like trade – seemingly bound by shoe leather and championed by an efficiently marshaled sales force – is now a cadre of expert consultants, assembled under a banner emblazoned with the hues of stewardship, fellowship and relationships with esteemed customers, partners and confidants. Today, the leaders of The Mid-Continent Companies stand poised to take the next steps in this exciting journey. Time, experience and the wisdom of our founder have taught us well: ours is not an odyssey that should be approached hastily, nor a pathway that should be traversed alone. In the coming months, The Mid-Continent Companies will join forces with some of our region’s most esteemed navigators of business best practices so that we may reach for new, open frontiers. Most important, each and every man and woman who define what The Mid-Continent Companies is today, has been called to join the caravan. Side by side, we will advance to create what The Mid-Continent Companies can become, across all of our tomorrows.

At Yorkshire Academy, certain words are imbued with exceptional meaning and significance. In the hallways and classrooms of Yorkshire, these words are brought to brilliant life through the actions and achievements of our teachers, staff, students and parents. This collection of words defines Yorkshire’s essence. These are the words that we at Yorkshire Academy live by.

We are everywhere. On the playground. Behind a cash register. Across the avenue. In the mirror. We Are All Crime Stoppers. As citizen-heroes, we promise to keep our community safe and thwart dastardly deeds before they can occur. Yet as Crime Stoppers, we can always do more. Together, through collective generosity and a spirit of shared responsibility, we can build a new Crime Stoppers of Houston headquarters. An advanced command center designed to set bold new standards for delivering justice. A facility energized by the commitment of a community standing tall against crime. And a first-ever Crime Stoppers home that will help make Houston a safer place to live, learn, work and play.

Faced with today’s younger, smarter, more ruthless criminal element, the new Crime Stoppers complex will exemplify the spirit of concerned citizens who are zealously fighting back. When we band together and remain vigilant, our community cannot only work to solve crimes, but can take steps necessary to preserve the safety of ourselves and our loved ones, long before crimes occur. While standing as a beacon of justice, the advanced Crime Stoppers facility will help fortify and streamline programs designed to keep Houston safe. Along with the famed Crime Stoppers TipLine (713-222-TIPS), these community-driven, grass-roots initiatives include the Safe School Program (SSP), Mothers Against Crime and Safe Community Program. Moreover, thanks to the Crime Stoppers Fallen Hero Project, when an officer or fire fighter is injured or killed in the line of duty as the result of felonious crime, Crime Stoppers’ anonymous cash reward will double through the generous support of the 100 Club. As we build new walls, Crime Stoppers will also once again break barriers and quell fears that have long hindered law enforcement. Always preserving anonymity of tipsters and encouraging crime- prevention efforts in every corner of our community, with your support, Crime Stoppers stands ready to operate more efficiently and effectively than ever before.

Because an uninsured mother struggles to sustain the health of her children. Because a newborn cannot greet the world with a smile. Because without somewhere to turn, the bonds of addiction are often too strong to be broken. Because of these reasons and countless more, CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare works to offer men, women and children of all faiths, ages and cultures access to high-quality medical services. And because of your support, by the end of this year, more than 50,000 disadvantaged people will receive the assistance they so desperately need. Because we all hurt, we must also heal. Because so many need us, we need you.

Heals on wheels. Because of cost, distance or simply the inability to leave their neighborhoods, many Houstonians remain a long way from the healthcare they so desperately need. Thankfully, the CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinic delivers healing where it is needed most.

Professionals of The Carruth Center specialize in developmental assessment and therapeutic services for children. Yet we endeavor, first and foremost, to form connections that enhance the lives of our client families. We listen. We discuss. We learn. Ultimately, we understand that each child is amazingly unique and that each family requires a distinct spirit of support. Years of experience have taught professionals of The Carruth Center that when our children succeed, families can grow stronger. Originally known as The Diagnostic Treatment and Training Center, our facility was established to provide Parish School families with access to individual speech therapy. In 1993, we were renamed The Carruth Center, in tribute to the patronage of Ethel G. Carruth and her family. Today The Carruth Center offers a full array of assessment and therapeutic services to families throughout our community.

For children whose daily routines – or even entire lifetimes – have been defined by the grueling physical and psychological demands of cancer and its treatment, “the great outdoors” may be more akin to an abstract idea than an easy encounter. From inside the rigid walls of a hospital room, treatment facility or oncologist’s office, a child’s window on the world is fogged by war with disease, open only to fleeting glimpses of what awaits outside. By nature, every child is curious, inquisitive and eager to explore. Yet despite seemingly boundless access to technology, media, entertainment and information, nothing sparks a child’s inherent sense of adventure quite like a chorus of birds at sunrise, the unbridled rush of white water, or a tapestry of diamonds in the night sky. Wonders such as these, and countless more, await at the Teton Science Schools, home to The Children’s Grand Adventure. This pioneering nonprofit program welcomes young cancer survivors to Jackson Hole, Wyoming for a nine-day immersion in one of our nation’s most majestic natural settings. Conquering cancer requires climbing a summit that a relative few will ever traverse. The Children’s Grand Adventure inspires youngsters who have made this trek to continue their journeys in a truly life-affirming direction.

A hundred years in lubrication research and nothing to show for it. Since we virtually eliminated aromatics and other impurities, our new Pure Performance™ Base Oils are not much to look at. But their unsurpassed purity, low toxicity, uniform composition, high oxidative stability and superior demulsibility really make them something to see. Conoco Pure Performance™ Base Oils. The difference is perfectly clear.

Connections. They can be very strong. They can be childishly simple. And people are making them every second of every day. But only one of them gives you the power to create and manage productive office environments virtually anywhere in North America.

An astoundingly accomplished pioneer in social work research and education, Dr. Allen Rubin joined UH-GCSW in 2013 after more than three decades as a University of Texas faculty member. He has served as president of the Society of Social Work and Research, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council on Social Work Education and authored a best-selling textbook, Research Methods for Social Work, which can be found at roughly 40 percent of social work schools. “After I got my master’s degree in 1969 and began working, I saw very little research based evidence of effectiveness surrounding social work and mental health practices,” says Dr. Rubin. This realization prompted him to earn a Ph.D. in 1976, launching a now celebrated career dedicated to research methodology and the efficacy of social service programs, policies and interventions. Today, much of Dr. Rubin’s work centers on bridging the gap between experimental outcomes and those realized in everyday practice. “Real world conditions typically make it impossible to achieve results as good as those seen in rigorous studies. Ideally, we can maximize the degree to which satisfactory results are achieved in the field, where there are often limited resources or intervention opportunities.” An immense source of knowledge and insight for students and faculty members alike, Dr. Rubin envisions a day when UH-GCSW sets a bold standard for social work education, focusing an entire doctoral curriculum on evidence-based practice.

“I can still feel that first breath. I had never been in air so fresh before,” says Reno Dominguez. That was 2009, when Reno first arrived at The Children’s Grand Adventure. Only four years earlier, in June of 2005, Reno was diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Today, Reno is a thriving student and formidable defensive lineman at his high school in Katy, Texas, as well as a two-time Grand Adventure participant. Along with recalling the sweet Wyoming air that filled his lungs, Reno cherishes memories of camping in Yellowstone National Park, forging new friendships and sharing in the spirit of independence he observed among wolves in their natural habitat. “I’m ready for another Grand Adventure,” he says. “But before I return, I want to make sure other kids who have beaten cancer can go first.”

While it may afford an architect speed, power and efficiency, technology is first and foremost a tool. One that often fails to convey the authentically human experience of three-dimensional space. Clients benefit most when we combine the strengths of technology with what can be seen, touched and encountered in the real world.

Amid this ceaseless campaign, soldiers of The Salvation Army never hesitate to take the offensive. Our warriors keep vigilant guard, mount a tireless attack and promise to emerge victorious. In 1996, thanks to many generous donors, volunteers and a host of corporate and community partners, the Houston Metropolitan Area Command of The Salvation Army took a number of triumphant strides forward. With your time, talents, dollars, gifts in kind and the Lord at our side, we marched farther than ever before into the shattered households and merciless streets where our ministry is needed most. Thanks to you, we were truly an army on the move.

The story of a child’s development can be one of subtle changes and sudden revelations. Indeed, the tale of each child’s growth is remarkably different from the next. Every achievement, trial and winding pathway to progress is what makes your child a remarkable individual. For many children, language and learning differences are part of the journey. While certainly challenging for any family, such distinctions may only signal the approach to a unique road upon which a lifetime of learning is traversed. At The Parish School, we embrace these differences, and through them, work to unlock and inspire the voice inside every child. A child’s sensory systems, memory, motor skills and even handwriting can all be pieces of a developmental puzzle that our instructors and experts can aid in assembling over time. Ultimately, we work to help each child consistently master his or her own voice, through speaking, reading, writing and comprehension. Moreover, we strive to make that voice boldly resonate as part of a child’s personal, social and intellectual identity. We capitalize on children’s existing strengths to help develop confident voices that take shape through new ways of tackling school lessons. Excited voices that express thoughts, feelings, accomplishments and ideas like never before. Beautiful voices that whisper, shout and inquire, all to the amazement of teachers, friends, family. And perhaps most important, voices that speak to the delight of a child’s own ears.

A client’s investment can be measured in materials, time and dollars. The architect’s investment is most beneficial when it is personal. Taking assignments to heart, we offer worth through anticipation, responsiveness and passion. Value that extends beyond detailed plans, accurate budgets or even finished products.

Architecture is a dialogue between a person and a structure. To resonate, it must first be an exchange uniting client and architect. A communication that reveals shared goals, addresses formidable challenges and foreshadows desired outcomes. As architects, we are called upon to continually advance the conversation.

Go ahead. Crack open practically any Communication Arts Advertising Annual from the past two decades. Chances are you’ll find an impressive sampling of Jeff Goodby’s handiwork. In fact, you may spank yourself for attempting to purloin an idea or two from the King of Concepts’ well-traveled grab bag. As co-chairman and creative director of San Francisco’s world-renowned Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, Jeff is proud father to such children as two silver-tongued lizards, milk-hording behavioral psychologists and a sinister, beer-loving penguin. Whether it’s on the tube, in the trade or around town, it’s a good bet you’re among the audience who sees Goodby’s intrusive, effective, emotive and ingenious good works every day. Now is your turn to come hear from the mouth of the master himself.

Good designers put layout elements in their proper places. Knowing how to draw attention to what’s most important is based upon an inherent understanding of visual hierarchy. Proper application of visual hierarchy takes advantage of ways people naturally process visual information. All cultures read top down and the majority read left to right. Text-heavy content is typically scanned in an “F” pattern, while a corner-oriented “Z” pattern reveals itself in mediums where content is lighter. People also read what’s largest first. Putting this knowledge into practice, layouts at Reliant adhere to an orderly flow; moving from top to bottom, large to small, benefit to feature. Large headlines draw a reader’s attention and communicate what matters most. Smaller subheads can support the headline theme and help organize information. Body text is the place for granular details. Building upon this tiered approach, use of color, contrast, open space, imagery and visual-processing knowledge can enhance the allure of our most critical layout elements.

Your child is the very embodiment of growth. Each day, every split second, changing and developing in remarkable ways. Some readily measurable, others virtually imperceptible. Yet all critical to the fertile mind, body and spirit of a child who will one day make a bold mark in our world. At Annunciation Orthodox School, we work to ensure that every youngster blossoms in a nurturing environment where students are taught – first and foremost – a passion for learning. Where the rewards of risk far outweigh the fear of failure. And where the most important growth occurs in ways that cannot be measured in inches, printed on report cards, or illuminated across a scoreboard. Since 1970, AOS has itself grown to rank among Houston’s most acclaimed independent schools – and today the AOS family is thriving. Our future is brighter than ever. A research subject doesn’t readily drink, smoke or use drugs in a traditional lab. The environment is incongruent with these behaviors. This stark, simple realization inspired creation of the Virtual Reality Clinical Research Laboratory. Researchers have long attempted to emulate real-world conditions through role-playing, videos or even physical construction of staged settings, but these methods are not genuine enough to produce meaningful results. Our lab is built upon the premise that both substances and environments engender cravings. For this reason, we engineer the most realistic settings and scenarios possible. We partner with field agency professionals and forerunners in virtual reality technologies to craft virtual cocktail bars, parties or drug dens imbued with incredible degrees of finely tuned detail – reflections in facets of an ice cube, the aroma of smoke, authentically tattooed avatars. In service to the social work profession and those it benefits, we are poised to venture as far as technology takes us.

Complexities in government are high, often because of fragmented IT environments utilizing disparate platforms, myriad software applications and legacy systems. Further, most government agencies struggle to maintain IT staffing levels and training budgets necessary to service and support infrastructures and operations. Because of constant pressure to achieve more with less, government entities should ideally employ a solid, Web-enabled Compaq platform with solutions that serve the entire population of constituents, even those few without online access.

Because these people may have nowhere left to turn, they rely on CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare – for essential, high-quality, life-preserving medical and social services. It is a mission manifest in many faces and many places all over the Houston area. Open access to medical care for the sick. Open arms for the homeless. Open hearts for those in addiction’s grip. Compassion throughout the community. Delivery of care to places far away. And to a nearby province of Houston-area parking lots, schools, neighborhoods and senior centers. The dedicated servants of CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare know that because of generous donors, their mission is made possible. So they end each day the same way they begin. With dedication. Faith. Thanks for their opportunity to serve. And a promise to keep pursuing a mission. Because we all hurt, we must also all heal. Be a part of the mission.

Hey Houston, it’s your main man Matthew. I’d like to introduce you to Reliant’s freshly minted branding campaign: a little somethin’ we call  “Life Switched On.” Did I say a “little” somethin’? Truth be told, Life Switched On is a mass-branding, multi-channel,  whole kit-and-caboodle kinda’ somethin’. We‘re talking social media, radio, outdoor, PR, e-mail, web, employee-and-community engagement. Not to mention some pretty sweet Life Switched On TV spots you’ll sneak-peek shortly. So what is Life Switched On, exactly? Powering, protecting and simplifying lives for generations to come. That’s Life Switched On. Winning hearts and minds across Texas. That’s Life Switched On. Speaking the language of our customers. Ilumina la vida, baby. How ‘bout chowing down with your buds at a tailgate, on the company’s dime. Eat hearty, haus. Reliant’s servin’ up a heapin’ helpin’ of L-S-O to you, too. The marketing-types call Life Switched On a “strategic platform” that sets the foundation for the Reliant brand. Me, I just call L-S-O an honest-to-goodness way to connect with folks, about ways we all use electricity in our lives. Whether we’re crankin’ up an amp, pullin’ an all-nighter, or makin’ a tasty slice of toast that’s just beggin’ for butter. Because at Reliant, we know not everyone is thinking about electricity.  But it’s there, in everything we do, every day.  That, mi compadres, is Life Switched On.

Dr. Luis Torres is an incredibly passionate ambassador for UH-GCSW. In his words, “We not only serve the community, we are the community.” A native of Puerto Rico, he earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fordham University in Bronx, New York. Joining the UH-GCSW faculty in 2008, Dr. Torres conducts vital research on health disparities impacting the Latino population. A vanguard for international outreach, borders cannot confine Dr. Torres’ definition of the word community. “Houston is a major gateway to Latin America, yet until recently, we had no study abroad program in the region.” In 2013, Dr. Torres and students closed the distance themselves, launching the Latin American Initiative, with field studies and university alliances established in El Salvador and Bolivia. It is Dr. Torres’ hope that the Latin American Initiative not only grows, but continues to illuminate issues close to home. “Houston’s Latino community faces many challenges. With a greater understanding of these phenomena in the countries of origin, we are better equipped to address them in our backyard.”

Think your workout is tough? Try carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Your exercise routine might be demanding, but for many Houston-area families who rely on YMCA Partners, life’s daily challenges prove to be a much heavier load.

UH-GCSW mirrors the diversity of Houston, the nation’s 4th most populous city, home to more than two million residents, global industries, acclaimed arts venues, deep-rooted ethnic communities and the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Our MSW and Ph.D. students hail from near and far, embodying an astounding array of origins, ages, experiences, outlooks and aspirations. Moreover, UH-GCSW is home to many of social work’s boldest, most-esteemed scholars, including a Nobel Peace Prize winner, an author of two New York Times Bestsellers and the preeminent authority on social work research methodology. What is the meaning of life? The chicken or the egg? If a tree falls in the forest…? Some questions are eternal. While others, like those about your energy needs, have answers. All it takes is the courage to ask.  You’ve heard from us. Let us hear from you. Ask us any burning, nagging or challenging question about your institution’s energy future. We’ll promptly respond with ways that energy – and NRG – can best serve you. As for the meaning of life? Even our power has its limitations.

Within offices, people invest countless hours, hard-earned assets and time-tested skills to produce robust fruits of labor. So it only stands to reason that workplaces should be functional, comfortable and inspiring settings where we can all take pride in delivering our best.

Through a window of his spartan office inside a construction-site trailer, E. E. Reed Construction senior superintendent Bill Sciba observes progress on the new Gyrodata building. When complete, this property in northwest Houston will encompass sophisticated manufacturing, testing and storage facilities for Gyrodata’s highly complex and extremely sensitive oil-field exploration components. “It’s a big responsibility to build a multimillion dollar project like this,” says Sciba. “It’s not my first rodeo, but I’m still proud the boss has faith in me.” It’s no surprise that Gene Reed holds Bill in high regard. After all, Bill was literally at Gene’s side when E.E. Reed was founded in 1976. “We opened our office with nothing, made desks from old doors and used paper bags for waste baskets,” recalls Sciba. “Our first job was building cabinets for a church in Stafford, Texas. That was job number one hundred. Gyrodata is job 1539 .” In the years since shuttling between a small office on Westheimer and E.E. Reed’s ever-expanding jobs in the field, Bill’s responsibilities have continued to grow. “Along with building, I manage all the equipment on every site,” he says. “I’ve also mentored many superintendents in our ranks. And when our in-house project managers are looking to make a job more efficient, I’m there to help.” If any man can claim to “have seen it all” in the construction game, it’s Bill Sciba. Today he ponders an industry where economic recession has resulted in a highly competitive contractor market, while project timelines relentlessly accelerate. “Now more than ever, time is money, every job is fast-tracked,” he says. “Schedules are so compressed that we have to be prepared for anything.” Case in point: at the Gyrodata site, a contingency plan was rapidly developed for installation of three 18,000-pound underground vertical pipes that serve as bases for gyro-testing platforms. This involved 12-foot-deep excavation and tons of concrete. Bill’s plan: halt second floor construction, call in a 60-ton crane and get it done. “No matter what, you do what’s right for the client and the job. That’s my code of ethics,” Bill concludes. “I call it code red. And if one of my crew doesn’t follow it, he answers to me.”

On any given Saturday, a heated basketball game near the grounds of southwest Houston’s Welch Middle School is commonplace. In 1989 on those storied and simmering blacktop courts, a different kind of contest occurred – one that would impact the lives of young men throughout Houston for decades, even lifetimes, to come. On this given Saturday, a pair of youngsters approached two older players with a brash but simple challenge. “You lose, you buy us pizza.” Although the more seasoned teammates – Roynell Young and Mike Anderson – emerged victorious, they graciously purchased lunch, opting to swap stories, spend time and share wisdom with their young combatants. What began as a friendly wager became a chance for Roynell and Mike to fulfill a purpose. For years, the longtime friends had sought a way to positively impact the lives of young men from the inner city. Thanks to a game of hoops, an extra-large pepperoni pie and a willingness to listen, Roynell and Mike had seized upon their golden opportunity. On this given Saturday, ProVision was born.

September 11, 2001 One day we’d all like to forget. One day we should always remember.

Cinco Ranch was once the untamed territory of cattlemen, mavericks and many of the Lone Star State’s legendary pioneers. Today, Cinco Ranch is among the most dynamic master planned communities in the Southwest – and still the setting for unbridled opportunity.

In 1964, the Houston Astrodome opened to worldwide acclaim, with a design so revolutionary and advanced, it became the standard by which all following stadiums were measured. “The Dome,” at one time a marvel of engineering and design, quickly took its rightful place as a major point of pride for Houston, rightfully earning the title “Eighth Wonder of The World.”

Our product is price.

Anyone can have a vision. But it often takes the right partner, with the right resources, to bring foresight to fruition. That’s why corporate clients and developers call on E.E. Reed. We offer expertise that spans the breadth of design and construction, while we see every build-to-suit project through the prism of possibility.

One could say that Dr. Bruno Gonzato’s children possess a unique inheritance. While most Italian youngsters played football, Dr. Gonzato’s offspring gathered around the forge, where papa taught them techniques that have been employed throughout the storied history of metalsmithing. With the founding of Indital USA, the Gonzato children have brought their papa’s reverence for wrought iron artistry to America. Calling upon the heritage and resources of their parent company in Italy, the Gonzato family today offers more than 10,000 wrought iron products – each richly reflective of a tradition that spans the centuries.

It’s all about Details. At least that’s what Robert Newman would have you believe. This one-time editor is now design director for Details magazine, with an illustrious past that includes similar stints at The Village Voice, Entertainment Weekly, Guitar World, New York and The Rocket in Seattle. Listen as he offers a month-by-month, blow-by-blow account of his life as a high-profile editorial designer in The Big Apple. Gasp as he describes agonizing photo shoots with the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Matt Damon and a scantily clad Elizabeth Hurley. And be awe-struck as he waxes nostalgic to recent days past, when he fashioned fantastic, award-winning spreads with a virtually unlimited design budget. But be warned. Parental discretion is advised.

We are more than employees. We’re ambassadors. And the people we serve are more than customers. They’re our neighbors in the communities we call home. Where we do more than donate. Where we give from the heart. We’re more than suppliers. We are stewards. Of the energy that’s essential today and the innovations that are shaping tomorrow. Together, we are more than coworkers. We’re caretakers. Embracing a brand, a culture and a cause more powerful than megawatts.

Moments after Stephen Decker’s birth, Dr. Ernest Cronin was called to the maternity ward at St. Joseph Hospital, where he diagnosed Stephen with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. Seven surgeries and 17 years later, Stephen’s smile is evidence that he requires no more significant procedures. A model high school senior at Alief Taylor, Stephen enjoys movies with friends, video games and pitching for his school’s baseball team. He even boasts a stellar academic record and aspirations of an athletic scholarship. Today most would never recognize that Stephen was born with a facial anomaly. Feeling especially blessed by their relationship with the men and women of the Cronin & Brauer Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic, Stephen and his family regularly donate their time as volunteers for Operation San Jose.

At 2:10 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike made landfall in Galveston, Texas. A strong category two storm, Ike’s winds regularly approached 100 miles per hour and reached as far as 120 miles inland. It would be several hours before Ike’s complete ferocity would strike Houston’s Interstate-10 Energy Corridor, but for E.E. Reed project superintendent Ben Joiner and his crew at Energy Tower II, the battle against Mother Nature’s brutal offspring had long since begun. “Work was underway on the eighth floor when it became clear Ike was headed our way. The north-side wall was in place, but we couldn’t get the south side poured quickly enough. We literally had to weather the storm,” says Joiner. “We used practically every piece of material and machinery on hand to brace the south-side forms against the gusts, but it wasn’t enough. The forms collapsed.” Despite the setback, and Ike’s impact on every E. E. Reed crew member’s home and family, 90 percent of the Energy Tower II team was back on the job Monday after the storm. “Actually, our schedule had been upset long before Ike. During excavation, we uncovered the foundation of a school that previously occupied the property. That discovery alone cost us a month-and-a-half,” recalls Joiner. Both natural and man-made delays were steadily overcome by crews who put in months of extra hours and weekend work. Ultimately the owner’s hard deadline was met, with tenants moving into the shimmering 17-story, class-A office property in early 2010. But the story of Energy Tower II doesn’t end there, because it’s a story that actually began in 1998. “My first job with E.E. Reed was as superintendent on Energy Tower I,” says Joiner. “Ten years later, when the owner decided it was time for a second tower, the E.E. Reed team that built the first project was still here and handpicked for the job. Such a high degree of loyalty among owner, contractor and project team is rare these days, but it’s the kind of commitment that defines every job at E.E. Reed.”

Well boys, would you lookie’ there. After all these years of searchin’, I think we finally found it. The treasure of the Sierra Madre? Nope. The Lost City of Gold? Wrong again, mi amigo. Why don’t you boys just read the sign? Uh, we can’t read. Boys, that sign says Laredo Brothers Steakhouse and Cantina, the new restaurant where you’ll find Texas-sized steaks, along with Mexican favorites like enchiladas and fajitas, the food that made Texas famous. Well I’ll be, would you look at the size of that chicken-fried steak! Well boys, the way I see it, there’s only one thing we can do. Eat? Boys, at Laredo Brothers, we don’t just eat, we Eat Grande! The new Laredo Brothers Steakhouse and Cantina – 1960 at Stuebner Airline, I-45 at Greenspoint Drive and I-45 at Bay Area Boulevard. Laredo Brothers. Don’t just eat, Eat Grande!

Like several U.S. bid cities, Houston far exceeds the basic infrastructure requirements for an Olympic Games. With a robust highway and major thoroughfare system, a new rail system, a strong accommodation network, state-of-the-art technology, the largest medical complex in the world and a security force experienced in protecting world leaders and overseeing large events, Houston is well-equipped to handle events the size of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Moreover, Houston possesses many additional strengths that are notable and significant for the Games.

More than 4,000 issuing offices throughout the United States. Unsurpassed financial strength and stability. Innovative applications that are setting industry standards. And a history of outstanding service spanning over a century. With credentials like this, it’s no wonder Stewart Title is Houston’s top dog among title insurance companies.
